Clean Your Hive

From time to time, you will need to clean your beehive to prevent infection in the bee colonies. You should read this carefully before beginning.

We recommend you only clean your hive at the end of each season. It would be silly to take your bee’s hive away while they’re living in it, right?! However, you can clean the hive in the middle of the season if your colony starts to experience infection or infestation.

To clean your hive, you first must make a cleaning solution of water and sodium carbonate. It sounds complicated, but it’s very easy to make! Simply mix 5kg or sodium carbonate with a liter of warm water and a small amount of dishwashing soap.

When you’re ready to clean, start by scraping leftover wax or honey from the hive. Basically, make sure the surfaces are free of standing residue. Then, pour the cleaning solution on the hive. Scrub the rest with a kitchen brush until the hive is clean. Then, simply rinse with cold water!
