Beekeeping with Children

First, it’s important for your kids to know the bees will not sting unless they make them mad. A great thing to teach your kids is to “hold still” if a bee lands on them, or to slowly walk away. 99 times out of 100, the bee will not sting.

Second, your kids should know not to play near the beehive. As long as they are a fair distance from it, they won’t interrupt the bees, and the bees won’t get angry.

Third, when handling the bees, it’s always a good idea to wear protective gear. Make sure to suit up BEFORE going into the back yard to give things an inspection.

Finally, and possibly most importantly, if your kiddo is afraid of the bees, don’t force them to handle them! It’s best to let their natural curiosity bring them to learning about bees, instead of having a traumatic life experience.

If you follow these tips, we bet your little buddies will be fun for the whole family!
